**Why is the Spine Important?**

The spine protects the spinal cord and provides a base of support for the head and organs. It also provides mobility for your trunk.

**What are the different parts of the spine?**

The spine is made up of 24 individual bones called vertebrae that are separated by discs. These spinal discs allow for the flexibility of the spine.

There are three regions of the spine.

The **cervical** spine is the neck region made up of 7 vertebrae.

The **thoracic** spine is the chest region made up of 12 vertebrae.

The **lumbar** spine is the lower back region made up of 5 vertebrae.

In addition, there are 5 fused vertebrae below the lumbar spine called the sacrum, commonly known as the tailbone.
